These pet Coonhounds are coming to Silverwalk this next week.  Their family lost their home in foreclosure and were unable to find homes for them 'cause Coonhounds are hunting dogs, right?  Well, not Sadie and Hoss - they are family pets, beloved by their children.  I hope they are available for when their family is on their feet again - but before that, I hope to find loving homes for them both.  They are crate trained, house broken, have lived w/children, HW negative....what more could a family want in a dog?  I am excited and sad to bring them to Silverwalk but I am glad to be here for them.   It is always difficult to decide who to bring in or not.  I have multiple requests weekly for sanctuary.  Beagles are always easier than Coonhounds.  These Coonies are exceptional with no other place to go...so, I stretch.  Don't we all?

National Dog Day! Today - Aug. 26

I've been wondering what to blog about and I did talk about National Dog Day in my online newspaper blog but what about here?   where most of us are invested in all things dog!.  Good grief - and now the day is almost over - at least here in Missouri, USA.

We had a nice day.  Temps tonight into the fifties so I turned down a single dog fan in the breezeway.  Shiloh and Sassie went up against something - they had everyone howling and when they finally did come home, Sassie is bloodied.  Not bad but she either went through some nasty brambles or cornered a varmint who didn't want to be cornered.  No bites. They are both exhausted and gosh, they ate well.

Good news on the adoption front.  The same Shiloh may have a visit next week from a family w/a good Beagle background.  The son wants a dog to pal with - and Shiloh would be right up his alley.  They are also looking at Justus, who lost out on a walk today.  He ignored me when I called to him, sat his butt down and looked out at the road.  Jedi came, so Jedi went for a walk :).   Dino has been out at Safe Harbor with two families looking at him!  The first took another dog but it was close.  The second is still undecided.

Shampoo Night

I need to shampoo my dogs more often.  I am still of the old school of not shampooing unless absolutely necessary.  However, these days, shampoos are better for their skin as long as one doesn't get carried away.  I did three tonight:

Oxford sunbathing

Oxford really needs about 3 medicated shampoos a week due to his horrible dry, yeasty skin :(.  He tolerated the shower much better than the tub; he actually seemed to feel the relief of the cleansing of his skin.  I had prepared syringes with Halo ear cleansing solution for each ear - no, not his favorite thing but that, too, he tolerated though with some dissent.  He is such a lovely dog and NO ONE has ever inquired about adopting him :(.

Margie, the Diva of Silverwalk

Margie may be having her yearling portrait done tomorrow or hopefully next week sometime.  She, too, did very well in the shower.  I was testing a shampoo for my friend Stacy.  Even though I probably used too much on small Margie, it rinsed really clean.  I was happy.  I was able to use the cream rinse through the shampoo.   Mmmm - she smells good.  Everyone is now on a towel in their crates for the night - current plan.  Do you see Seymour peeking behind Margie?

Todd - too cute for words

I had noticed Todd feeling soiled and greasy, too, so I popped him in the shower after the others.  Had no clue what he would do but he is pretty submissive when he is not guarding the yard.  Todd simply stood and let me wash him all over, enjoying the massage.  He is one Beagle who is listed to be adopted but I hope is not - HA.  He is a sweetie pie.  When he melts into your chest for a nap, you are in Beagle heaven along with him.  I forgot to use the cream rinse on him.  I have others - many others - to  bathe another time.

Coonhounds: Bossy, Laid Back and Adolescent Pup, Oh, My!

Silverwalk currently has three resident Coonhounds; well, two and a Coonhound mix - you have met Justus, the Dobie wannabe but not quite.  The other hounds are Jedi TreeWalker, a Treeing Walker Coonhound - surprise, and Sassie, a small TWC female.

"Laid Back" - Jedi TreeWalker

Jedi is most definitely part of the Force and decidedly NOT part of the Dark Side.  Jed wasn't here long when my Episcopal priest visited.  It was instant attraction.  Bob has fully sponsored Jed, planning to bring him home when their aged beautiful Airedale Winnie is ready - as well as Helen, Bob's wife.   Bob, Helen and Winnie come often to walk Jed together or Bob comes alone.  Jed loves these walks, though the other morning he was asleep on the couch when normally he would have been outside.  Bob called me from my driveway asking where Jed was  (he is an early bird which I am not so normally he just gets him on his own).  So, I looked over at Jed, still sacked out and moved him out into the yard.  When he heard Bob's whistle, he took off - he knew who was here and what was up!  Bob and Helen are very dedicated dog owners, solidly believing that once you take "ownership" of a dog,  it is indeed for life...no matter what.  This is how Jedi TreeWalker came to be a feature of yesterday's sermon at our church!  Fr. Bob spoke of our responsibility to our planet, in light of the heat wave of this summer and indeed, this year and decade, all confirming the current global warming.  Part of being responsible, caring humans is to care and take care of our four legged friends, even if Jed rolls on his stomach for a nap on the second leg of an early walk.  Thus, Jedi TreeWalker joins Winnie as an "Episcopuppy."  why do we call him "Jed" instead of  "Jedi?"  He truly is a laid back, go with the flow, no big deal, hound dog.

"Bossy" - Sassie

See that smiling face?  Sassie is a beautiful dog with a boss complex.  She had lived her first four years in a family with children but when they moved (Ok, I am not getting on the soapbox here - yet), they tuned Sassie into a kill shelter.  Luckily for her, Silverwalk had worked w/them before so they contacted us - well, Laura did - she is a champion at finding her shelter dogs rescues.  Sassie does not have a bay - she has a sharp, shrill bark, hmmm, not unlike nails on a chalkboard :(.  I think in observing her and her interactions with the pack that she wants to play but truly doesn't know how.  She gets along super well with Shiloh - he and she are my fence jumpers - sigh - they both have solid collars with collar tags on.  My local humane society already knows Shiloh - he of the Methodist faith - Shiloh on occasion will go to the Methodist Chapel up the road.  So far, they have always come home - I certainly do NOT recommend this to anyone with their dogs....She can be a very fun dog one on one, so I continue to pray for her forever home.   We are currently working on relieving her of her perceived need to be "boss."  It is a work in progress :).

"Adolescent" - Justus, 7 months now

Justus is growing and getting bigger but not changing in sweetness, temperament or charm.  He plays a lot with Jedi and Margie, well, frankly, anyone who will play with him.  He is definitely a mix - best guess is Black and Tan Coonhound/Dobie/German Short-hair Pointer.   Only God knows for sure. Both he and Jed are still working on their CGC, a bit hampered by the heat.   Click HERE  for Justus's previous post.

Happy Jack - looking way too serious in this photo!

Happy Jack has a home, too.  I took him from Safe Harbor to class last Tuesday.  A teenager was looking for his own dog.  He worked another SH dog, then Jack.  Jack was tested w/the family on Wednesday, passed with flying colors.  I wish I could get the photo of his resting on the couch w/his new boys from my message but have not yet been able to transfer it.  Happy Jack has proved not only to be happy but protective as well - which pleased his new family as dad is often gone on business.  Way to go, Happy Jack! 

I also want to share the mind set of those in this county and area.  A family member of a friend of mine from Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary were concerned about her reaction to their getting a dog from the Humane Society and not Safe Harbor.  A life was saved - doesn't matter from where!  The right dog found the right family - and we all rejoice.  We actively send inquirers to one another should we know someone has a dog or cat closer to what an adopter is wanting or looking for - sure, we all want our pets adopted but more than that, we want everyone to be very, very happy for a very, very long time.  Amen.
