Happy Dog...less than happy cats...

YESH for Lady Bird!!!

Hi guys-

I promise not to update you every week, but I just wanted to let you know how LadyBird did for her first full week:)  We are still having problems with her chasing the cats ( I really think a home without cats would be best for her)  There are times when she walks around almost hunting for them.  I don't think she would ever hurt them, but she is so interested and doesn't understand that they don't like her:)  She and Diesel have started to wrestle and play tug.  In fact last night Diesel had to push her away when he had had enough- she still wanted to play. 

We took them to the beach today and she did well.  At first she was barking at every dog that came our way, but with a stern shh she firgured that like cars she doesn't need to bark at all of them.  I tried to keep most dogs away from her, but there were many dogs off leash that came our way.  She didn't have a problem with any of them.  A small beagle was one of them.  I'm sure that doesn't mean she likes all dogs, but she never lunged or growled at any of them.  We only stayed about a half hour, but she was already much better by the time we left.  She also hasn't made one mistake in the house, and lets us know when she needs to go out.

I think that's it.  I attached a few pictures just so you would see that she is doing okay.  She loves laying in the sun!  Any word on adopters yet?

The MIce are Winning

Lady Bird is doing well in her new foster home in Kennebunkport, ME.  Sassie can hardly wait to blow this pop stand and get to her own home and child.   Happy Jack is going to Courtney's as a foster dog on Sunday; Mason is coming to stay for 2 weeks as a foster Beagle for our local humane society before going to St. Louis and Winston, another Black and Tan for American Black and Tan is coming on Thursday.....Life is not boring at Silverwalk!


The mice are winning - they are now living mostly in my bathroom making forays into the house for food (I presume).  The bathroom has an empty dog bag w/other empty dog bags in it - I think this is their hotel.  It is more safe as I keep the door closed so I have had some private space.  I am ambivalent about the mice.  Yes, they are vermin but the last family to die were the parents on my counter presumably from the mouse bait and then I found two babies huddling in the second bathroom next to the heater!  Rend my heart right now - I gave them to two dogs who I knew would be swift & efficient....they were :(.  


When I first moved here, I had cats and horses.  The horses are why I bought this property in the country when I had always been a city girl.  They are in different homes now and much missed.  Anyway, we twice had a visitor in the form of a ground squirrel - I think.  She came in - my little brain injured cat chased her around the bedroom waking us all up; I put her outside.  She returned.  I named her Evelyn.  I thought if I knew where she pooped, I could let her stay.  Then I wondered what she ate.  Well, the big cats - the lazy cats who later both passed due to diabetes complications - simply lay on the floor as Evelyn neatly balanced herself first on their food bowl, delicately eating, then did the same to their water bowl.  This is when I thought she could stay.  Well, Tibby (for TBI - traumatic brain injury; all my cats were former barn cats and Tibby, we think, was kicked by a horse as she stopped growing and her head was always tilted) - saw her after her meal and zoom!  Poor Evelyn got caught on some shipping tape.  I am sure she died of a heart attack/fright as she never moved after I put her in a box :(.

I will most likely end up getting some more bait but first I need to clean up the outside pen and put the tarp on in the rain for my newly adopted 6 y/o blind Bloodhound who had never been in a car in her life till Tuesday & is now at the vet's for her spay and that, my friends, is another story....Have a good day!

Leaving Silverwalk....

 I drove to Memphis, TN on Thursday to get Lady Bird to her Puppy Bus which really was a semi FILLED w/puppies and dogs heading for the northeast and better chances at adoption.  She rode really well as she always does; barked at some dogs but otherwise was her beautiful self - which several people commented on :).   As we were waiting to load, a woman and boy in a car pulled up behind where I was walking her.  She wondered what was going on.  When I told her all these dogs were adoptable and going to the NE for a better chance at homes, she was aghast.  She kept looking at a chocolate Lab boy, blocky head, PB, then wanted to know how one found out about these dogs.  OMgoodness.  So, I told her to go online to Petfinder.com, put in her zip code and she would be shown a number of rescues, shelters in her area, all w/dogs needing homes.  She didn't know and she thanked me.  I thank God she asked at all and was open to education - now I pray she follows up, finds a dog and adopts her :). 

The Puppy Bus aka PETS transport has arrived in ME and "our" dogs are either at their fosters or on their way in cars.  Just heard today.  :))). 

Sassie, the TWC who came in at the same time as Bailey, is being adopted.  She fell in love w/the little girl and mom who came to visit on Wednesday - she cried at the window while she watched them leave!  She will go to her new home the first week in February.  Even had they not adopted her, I learned for sure Sassie needed a family w/children.  Way to go, Sassie!

Fostering Hope - More than a Program

We are community. 
This past Saturday, I participated with two other rescue interested persons in Fostering Hope, a program at our local Petco to seek foster homes for area shelters and discuss adoption, fostering, rescue, etc. with interested persons who pass by.  We were at the front of the store so we were able to capture a lot of people.  Melanie had one of her Pit Bulls, Tori, not up for adoption anymore and Lanette (Bootheel Area) had this drop dead cutey pie puppy who will be a big dog looking for a home.  We had scads of cards from multiple rescues in the area.  We talk about EVERYONE in rescue in our area - we talked about our coalition, the needs of all of us from the Humane Society to Silverwalk to Bollinger County to Bootheel to Caruthersville....the dogs stopped traffic so we were able to get words in edgewise and have wonderful discussions with animal loving people.  I was even able to design a business card for Lanette!  HA.  We as Fostering Hope do expect all participating entities to take part in the monthly Saturday presentations - not every month but certainly more than once a year :).  In this way, people who return as customers once a month meet those involved in the different rescues, not the same faces all the time.  It is a reasonable expectation of a group who is one for all and all for one.  Thanks to Rollin and Petco for the vision and support.

• HSSEMO received a huge donation of food and then proceeded to share with a number of local entities who will then be able to share with others in need.  I made two stops on my way home plus had a neighbor come down and pick up food.  Thank you!

• Debi Baker of Rainbow Ranch/Recycling Rover is a member of Shelter Alliance.  She either makes trips here to see her family or we go to her place (fun either way!) to receive donations of shampoo, supplements, treats, etc. for rescues and those in need.   Thank you - I love my Margie :). 
• Steve, aka Shadow, has launched "Cause for Paws."  It is a pet food pantry for those who may be otherwise unable to feed their pets - and often will feed their pets before themselves.  He gathers donations from various entities and distributes them to local food pantries such as Christ Episcopal Church, Red Door Baptist and others, so those who pick up food for themselves can now feed their pets as well. 
  

We foster Hope - it is much more than the title of a program - it is a way of thought and action for those of us in rescue or in support of rescue here in southeast MO and beyond.
